ADVANCED LINDY HOP & SWING CULTURE

You are dancing Lindy Hop since at least 4 years and manage to dance Swing Outs at a tempo of 200 bpm without any struggle. You do not think in 8 or 6 count patterns any more. Your dance is full of improvisation and your repertoire is very big. You like to focus on your partner and have a good body lead. You switch from dancing Lindy Hop to Charleston when the music feels like it and not because of the tempo.

FOCUS CLASSES

Learning Modalities and Dance   with DEE

We'll explore how we learn and internalize movement and accountability for that movement to analyze the lens we create to understand this art and how that affects a Black art form. A class for teachers but also a class for anyone learning this dance.

A Perspective on Dance in Black Social Culture    with DEE

This interactive lecture discusses some of the ways Black Culture lives in Music and Dance and how it is a throughline of historic and contemporary Black Culture, and shares a lifetime experience as a result of that throughline.

The Culture of the Jam   with DEE & FELIPE

Let's examine how jamming has changed over time and how that has affected the inclusivity of the jam. How can we bring people IN to the jam? How do we celebrate the success of the group AND each other? We'll bring some of the historical implications to today's dance to do just THAT.

THE TEACHERS

DEE DANIELS LOCKE

Dee started Swing Dancing at the age of three with her dad in the basement, wearing her mom's heels and her favorite plaid skirt. She is a true Heritage Dancer and Tradition Bearer, learning from and dancing Lindy Hop with her family (not solely a studio), in the context of black culture, music, and expression. During her school years went into hip-hop and was called back to Lindy Hop, and co-founded her college swing dance club. She has become an influential member of the Minneapolis scene. For over two decades she's shared her love of Lindy Hop with dancers young and old, teaching, performing, and dancing at swing dance events.

Dee loves feeling free on the dance floor and advocates for self-expression and individual creativity as the true spirit of Lindy Hop and Vernacular Jazz. She brings an inclusive, shared knowledge, and individual ownership perspective from black culture classes. She dances for the joy and self-worth in expression that music and dance play in black culture in either partnered or solo dancing, and searches for presence in each moment. She loves responding to the music and partner, priding herself on making each dance unique to the musical experience and partner, creating an authentic dance conversation.

She has recently enjoyed dancing a residency in Sw!ngout! at the Joyce Theater in NYC and on tour, and has taught, performed, and choreographed nationally and internationally, but mostly she wants to have a good dance. You should ask her, she follows and leads and wants to dance with you.

FELIPE BRAGA

Felipe grew up in an environment where music, dance, and rhythms are a part of everyday life. Spending most of his youth in music studios, theatre productions and performing absurd theatre sketches in a local theater in his hometown in Brazil, Felipe only encountered Swing Dancing when he moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina, to study film making.

Feeling drawn to Jazz Music and the beauty of the social dance culture, Felipe's pursuit in the Jazz Dances took him to the biggest dance camps and competitions around the world. There he would learn more about the origins and history of this culture that had captivated him.

In the next few years, Felipe would establish himself as an avid performer and instructor, sharing his passion and love for Jazz history, music and dance.

MARTA STAWICKA

Marta took her first steps in dancing at the age of 6. The choice fell on Hip Hop. It wasn't long before sequins and Ballroom Dance competitions took over her life. It's a fact that many years of experience and work in the atmosphere of Latin rhythms and elegance of Standard are a strong core of Marta's dance development.

Something she was missing after all – was the  element of improvisation! Since 2018, Lindy Hop, a space filled with inspiring music, freedom of movement, and plain fun, is her most important source of energy. Thanks to unique people and the magical atmosphere of dancing together, the journey with Lindy Hop may never end for her. She tries to share her inexhaustible energy, passion, and knowledge during classes, workshops, and social dances.

ALEXEY KAZENNOV

Alexey Kazennov is an incredibly talented and inspiring swing dancer who is currently living in Poland. He started dancing in 2013, with extraordinary enthusiasm going to every single party. In 2015 he began teaching, practicing, and traveling all over the world, making dancing his profession. Since then, he has won a great number of competition titles (ILHC, Savoy Cup, The Snowball, Lindy Shock, Rock That Swing, and long etcetera!). He loves to challenge and push himself constantly to improve. Lindy hop, Authentic Jazz, Blues, Balboa, and St. Louis Shag… He can dance it all! Alexey is famous for his personal style as a dancer, his big smile, and most of all for his high energy on the dance floor. You will probably see him until the party ends, don't miss his "survivors picture"! His purpose as a teacher is to inspire people to find their own style.

Poland, where he teaches in ShimSham – Warszawski Swing and Retro Dance Studio in Poznań, became his second home. Before he had an opportunity to work for a few years with dancers from Istanbul.

Do you believe that someone can dance for 24 hours non-stop? Yes, this is Alexey!
